Double Take #1

Double Take is a new post that shows off covers that look similar.

The first two covers are:

Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky and Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Both covers show a close-lidded jar with items inside; Awaken adorns its jar with blooming flowers and neutral, muted colors. Beautiful Disaster keeps the colors very somber and faded with a bright light coming in from the bottom left of the jar, whitewashing out the left side of the butterfly while the right wing stays it's brilliant blue.

From the cover:

Awaken : Maddie lives in a world where everything is done on the computer. Whether it's to go to school or on a date, people don't venture out of their home. There's really no need. For the most part, Maddie's okay with the solitary, digital life - until she meets Justin. Justin likes being with people. He enjoys the physical closeness of face-to-face interactions. People aren't meant to be alone he tells her.

Suddenly, Maddie feels something awakening inside her - a feeling that maybe there is a different, better way to live. But with society and her parents telling her otherwise, Maddie is going to have to learn to stand up for herself if she wants to change the path her life is taking.

Beautiful Disaster : The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn't drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend America, her path to the new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs - and wants - to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the charming college co-ed. Intrigued by Abby's resistance to his charms, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis' apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

My Thoughts: It looks like both books have a female lead who is forced into someone that abides by the rules and tries not to bring attention to themselves - until they meet the *dun-dun-duuuuun* bad boy who brings about a revolution within them. Awaken's cover represents Maddie's "blooming" and becoming the person she's meant to be. Beautiful Disaster's cover shows a butterfly representing Abby; someone who's keeping a part of her secret, and in the dark; while her other half is what the world sees. The light shining behind her shadowed wing shows that her secret side wants to be part of her lighted side. Both seem to represent girls who are being forced to comply with a set of rules (hence, the closed jar); but who are fighting to grow into the girls that they want themselves to be.

What are your thoughts?

  1. They do look very similar, and the idea behind the book sounds the same too. I would still read both just to see how the author executed it, their writing style might be totally different. :)
