Review - Ripple by Mandy Hubbard

RIPPLE
By: Mandy Hubbard
hardcover, 260 pages
Published July 21st 2011 by Razorbill/Penguin

Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. The water calls to her, draws her in, forces her to sing her deadly song to unsuspecting victims. If she succumbs, she kills. If she doesn't, the pain is unbearable. To keep herself and those she cares about safe, she shuts herself off, refusing to make friends or fall in love - again. Because the last time she fell in love with a boy - he ended up dead.

Then Lexi finds herself torn. Against her better judgement, she's opening up again, falling in love with someone new when she knows she shouldn't. But when she's offered the chance to finally live a normal life, she learns that the price she must pay to be free or her curse is giving him up.

WHY I WANTED THIS BOOK: I remember seeing this one around back in July when it first came out. I saw it at the library when I was last there and grabbed it. Plus, I'm a sucker for a good siren story!

STORY/PLOT: Unique and captivating; kept me fully engaged. There is a lot of story packed into 260 pages.

CHARACTERS: Lexi was a really good character. It was very easy to feel her struggles, heartbreaks, and eventual love and happiness. She is definitely one of the better characters I've read in a long time. Cole is great too, Erik I got a total creeper-vibe from the whole time, and Sienna, while her pain is understandable, wasn't so great for ditching Lexi, again.

WRITING: Hubbard's style is likable and flows easily. Not many hangups in the story; would happily read more from her.

ENDING: The ending was good. There was a happily ever after but it wasn't achieved without a small percentage of loss. Good balance between giving Lexi what she wants and deserves but making her work and struggle to get there.

COVER: Let's talk about the cover for a minute, shall we? I hate it. OK, I don't hate all of it, but most. What I like: The little bit of the iridescent scales on Lexi's legs. The lake looks cool, and Lexi's tree is on the cover. That's all fine and dandy, but the guy? Awful. I don't know why he bothers me so, and there is no connection between the two on the cover either. It's like two people looking at each other and pretending to have that love look in there eyes. Ugh. No thanks. I think a cool cover would've been Lexi swimming, singing her song, and maybe just a silhouette of a guy on the waters edge heading in to her, something like that would've been cool!

FINAL THOUGHTS: It's short and sweet and worth the read. Lexi's a great character and I would recommend this to anyone with an affinity to the water.

  1. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised with the overall plot line. it was not what I was expecting. I agree with you about the cover. I missed Lexi's leg scales when I bought it and if the designers were going to go that route they should have made the "fishy" aspect more pronounced-and the guy? I'll see your "awful" and raise you a yuck!
